The method bu which this fic is written calls for a very specific use of the language, and the 'old' way the prompt was written clashed with the rest of it.

Lights flickered out in home and town alike as they came, doors were bolted shut, and those that were trapped outside fled like hunted things before them. They were perfect and merciless, glowing-eyed devils with their inhuman strength, inhuman speed, inhuman ways. Steel would rend the flesh of last country's warriors, flesh would rend flesh, and they would race across the fields like silent bolts of lightning, striking hard, fast, and with all the vicious of nature unleashed in a single second. They stole the power of the gods, trapped it in weapons in armor and called it down upon their enemies, freezing and burning and destroying completely.

Always they came, a relentless and unstoppable hurricane of violence and skill, always they killed, and always they were lead, their silver demon always at their head, that vicious, deadly shadow always at his side. They were the worst of the storm when it came, an unforgiving circle of lethal skill and furious intent. The whole storm was braved, however cautiously, but only that spot was feared. Only the bravest, the strongest, the most foolhardy ventured near on purpose, for nothing treaded near the demon and his shadow and escaped that vortex unscathed.

The storm would soon shift, though, they way storms always do, and when the killing was done, the flurry of cleanup began, a smaller storm, a less violent one, but one just as chaotic and confusing, and when the storm shifted, so did they, going from the most violent to the most serene. What was once the core of the storm's fury because the one area of calm, of tranquility. They remained near each other, and they both called the other's self back. They were not demons nor devils, beasts nor forces of nature. They were human, and they would remain that way until the storm began again.

001.

I knew I’d want it, if I hadn’t got it!

002.

I am not the master of the law, and cannot set it aside.

003.

I suppose you feel that everything has gone off splendidly and according to plan?

004.

Our last shortcut through woods nearly ended in disaster.

005.

There was something in this tree that I have never seen before.

006.

I see shapes of Men and of horses…

007.

We believe that we may meet again in a time to come, and perhaps we shall find somewhere a land where can live together and both be content.

008.

Do not touch the water!

009.

Lights went out in the house and hamlet as they came, and doors were shut, and folk that were afield cried in terror and ran wild like hunted deer.

010.

You seem to know a lot. More than is good for you, I guess.

011.

The chamber was filled with a soft light; its walls were green and silver and its roof of gold.

012.

The passage is blocked behind us now, and there is only one way out…

013.

The dark water boiled, and there was a hideous stench.

014.

He drew a deep breath. Well, I’m back, he said.

015.

Did not the lady tell me to beware of them? And now I cannot forget them.

016.

So they both lived, delighting in their own devices, and feared no assault, nor wrath, nor any end of their wickedness.

017.

The Sun dipped and vanished, and as if at the shuttering of a lamp, black night fell.

018.

It’s dangerous, yes it is. It burns, it kills.

019.

With hearts strangely lightened they now rested again, but not for long.

020.

When he woke up the sky above was dim, not lighter but darker than when they had breakfasted.

021.

We shall search the valley from head to foot and peer under every pebble.

022.

He picked up his shears and exhibited them as evidence.

023.

And sooner or later as he lurked and pried on the borders he would be caught, and taken – for examination.

024.

In fact, it is partly about that that I have come to say a last word.

025.

But there is no other way out that I can see or think of.

026.

I will tell you what I know, and leave the reward to you. You may be glad to grant it, when you have heard me.

027.

All that is gold does not glitter.

028.

Under the shadow of bushes leaning out over the water they halted and drew breath.

029.

I have forgotten much that I thought I knew, and learned again much that I had forgotten.

030.

This in brief is how I see things at the moment, if you wish to have a piece of my mind as plain as possible.

031.

But oft the unbidden guest proves the best company.

032.

The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.

033.

That is a very interesting remark. I may have to report that.

034.

We are going now to a secret place we have, somewhat less than ten miles from here.

035.

He felt as if the whole dark world was turning upside down.

036.

I do not know what put it into your head, or your heart, to do that.

037.

I see strange tales are woven about you.

038.

I received you for your safe-keeping, and also to do as I might bid.

039.

The fool’s hope has failed.

040.

I wish I could carry you. You aren’t fit to walk any further.

041.

It’s not always a misfortune being overlooked.

042.

Yet I would not have you remain like a beggar at the door.

043.

My lord, you called me. I come.

044.

His grief he will not forget; but it will not darken his heart, it will teach him wisdom.

045.

But as for your terms, we reject them utterly.

046.

He was naked, lying as if in a swoon on a heap of filthy rags.

047.

Where are we? How did I get here?

048.

All right, but there’s room enough for two.

049.

They awoke together, hand in hand.

050.

I think we had better not move out from here again, until it has gone quite dark.

051.

Alternate: You will be glad to have these safe again.

052.

Alternate: I was awake early this morning, and now it must be nearly noon.

053.

Alternate: Then what were you all doing? You were shut up for hours.”

054.

Alternate: What was the thing, or were there many of them?

055.

Alternate: ____ was snoring at his side long before he himself closed his eyes.

Title: R is for Respite
Source: Final Fantasy VII
Pairing: N/A
Rating: PG
Notes: This was supposed to be part of an alphafics challenge, suggested by nalcondetox. However, it.... kinda didn't work. ~_~ So.

Sometimes he looked at his boots when he walked.

He was looking at them now. Left foot, right foot. Left foot, right foot. He liked them, had wanted a pair of them ever since joining ShinRa. They were good boots. Solid, brown, steel-toed, zippered. Left foot, right foot. Scuffed and worn, but still solid. Still durable. They'd last him for a few more years yet. Stand issue with every SOLDIER's set of equipment, those boots would have cost two times more than most other shoes on the market. Left foot, right foot. They were good boots. He liked them.

They weren't his.

No, his boots were black. They weren't bad, either, but he hated them. Pain in the ass to take care of. He always got yelled at if they weren't polished right, or if they were scuffed, or if the buckle wasn't done properly, or his pants weren't tucked in all the way, or if.... or if....

Left foot, right foot.

He frowned. Or if....? Oh, yeah. If he didn't, then the gen--

Pain shot through his head, and his vision started to white out. He couldn't see his boots that weren't his anymore. Left foot, right foot, then no foot, he missed a step, felt the world tilt wildly, even though he couldn't see it tilt. No feet, no balance, no hope -- he couldn't-- couldn't--

Left foot, right food. His vision cleared.

"Cloud?" He blinked, looked over. Tifa was frowning, hand half raised as if she were reaching for Cloud, and Aerith was lingering behind her, looking worried. Cid was leaning on his spear and eying him. Vincent was just watching him, his face free of expression. Barret was off to the side, shouting at Yuffie, and Cait Sith, bouncing up and down on poor Nanaki's head, was chanting at them both, maybe trying to stop them, but probably just cheering them off.

"It was nothing," Cloud replied. "Guess I'm just tired." And thinking. What was he thinking about? Something about.... something.... ah, it wasn't worth it. Vincent nodded and spoke up, still a rare occurrance for him.

"It will be best to rest. We have not had much chance to sleep." Part of Cloud wanted to argue, and he knew that everyone else wanted to, too, but everyone started nodding and dropping their belongings unpacking whatever they would use that night. Cid walked over and started yelling at Barret and Yuffie to cut it out. Aerith cheerfully made her way over to engage Vincent in a conversation. Cait Sith got chased into sheltering behind Cid by Barret. Cloud frowned at his boots -- he hadn't been thinking about them, had he? -- moved over to sit under a tree he'd passed earlier.

Left foot, right foot.

Maybe he had been thinking about his boots. Ancients knew he needed another pair. These were so scuffed and worn. Pretty good for having them for.... his vision started to white out again, and he shook his head. Well, it didn't matter how long he'd had them. A while. Long enough.

At least he didn't have to polish them.

the brief flicker of fear in her eyes hurts more than the nails digging in to his wrist ever could.

#05 Potatoes
Potatoes are most unromantic, inelegant plants imaginable, but one baked with garlic and butter is meal fit for royalty when they're together.

#06 Rain
Midgar's rain is always dirty, both above the Plate and below it, and maybe that's why they didn't seek better shelter when Kalm's skies opened up above them, instead laying curled beneath the tree and letting the clean rain wash over them.

#07 Chocolate
He never had the money for the really expensive, fancy gifts, but that didn't matter, because his hopeful, silly grin and the cute chocolate Cactaur were more than enough for her.

#08 Happiness
Midgar is supposed to be a miserable city, but there is happiness to be found in small places: a gentle touch, a pink ribbon, and bright green eyes over a quiet smile.

#09 Telephone
Neither of them wants nor needs a cellphone, but that doesn't stop him from tugging her inside the store; he sets off catchy ringtones and dances little jigs till she laughs and claps, and both are soon shooed from the store by the manager.

#10 Ears
Her ears are one of her more sensitive spots, he thinks, and when she giggles and claps her hands over them, he always nuzzles at her fingers as if seeking a prize.

#11 Name
His last name fits well on him, but he thinks it would fit even better on her.

#12 Sensual
He almost didn't realize that he' placed his fingers against her mouth, but he was sharply reminded that that were there when his fingertips disappeared past pink lips, and white teeth gently nipped at the skin.

#13 Death
Five years is unable to dampen the feeling that some crucial part of her is being viciously torn away, and the pain almost causes her to fall to her knees.

#14 Sex
It wasn't as good as the gentle nips and nuzzles beforehand, nor half as important as the peacefulness that came from holding and being held after.

#15 Touch
'Guess who' had always been his favorite game, for some reason, but even if she hadn't recognized his voice, she would have known from his touch, because his hands were always rough in texture, warm, and gentle.

#16 Weakness
SOLDIERs aren't supposed to have weaknesses, she knows, for the best did not have such, but around her, he wasn't a SOLDIER; he was just a person who got tired and hungry and lonely like any other.

#17 Tears
Everything reminds her of him, but she forces herself to not cry; he always hated it when she did, and besides: the sight and smell of the flowers she grew should be a happy one.

#18 Speed
He always had places to be, things to do, people to talk to, and it always seemed like he was moving a mile a minute; but he also always found time to slow down, to wait, to just be with her.

#19 Wind
He was playful, and sometimes the wind was too; this wind wasn't, though-- it was vicious and violent, and it tore at her hair and clothes, pushing her up against the buildings and making her stagger, and when she finally managed to stagger inside, she was relieved to find that he was feeling playful, even though she squawked indignantly when he scooper her up in his arms.

#20 Freedom
Death was not freedom; she had a duty to continue, he had a promise to keep.

#21 Life
Yellow, white, green, all among a sea of grey stone, grey steel, even grey wood, so much that you think that the color is fake, reproduced, created for a dull, boring world to try to break the monotony, but this is not fake-- it's real and it's vibrant and even in such a dull, lonely building in such a dull, lonely city there is life.

#22 Jealousy
He's not him and she knows it, but she can't help but feel an ugly flash of jealously when that quiet, secret look is directed towards someone who isn't her.

#23 Hands
She was not a tall woman, and her body was built all in proportion; her hands nearly disappeared inside his, but that was okay, because it was cold outside, and he was always warm.

#24 Taste
She'd made him close his eyes when she'd slipped the fruit into his mouth, and laughed and nodded when his eyes snapped open and he'd let out a startled exclamation that sounded quite a bit like, "Strawberries!"

#25 Devotion
He was able to stay behind, to defy all the laws of the world, and because of that devotion, he was able to meet her with a smile, an offered hand, and a matter-of-fact, "I told you I'd wait."

#26 Forever
He wasn't supposed to be able to stay the way he did, but he did anyway, and she thought that eventually, maybe, he would finally let himself be torn out of the Lifestream and pushed back into another role; he would always come back, though-- no matter how many times it happened he would always return, whole, and seek her out, and even when the Lifestream dwindled away, he would go and return forever and ever until there were few, then two, then one, then none.

#27 Blood
It always unnerves her when he has blood on his uniform, even if it's just a small stain, and an old one at that; she accepts every aspect of him, but she doesn't like being reminded of his profession.

#28 Sickness
He'd once laughingly informed her that he never got sick; the next day he had a cold, and she'd loved being able to feed him chicken noodle soup.

#29 Melody
Whenever he was lonely, he tended to whistle; nothing much, really-- just a quiet little melody that she always hummed while she worked with her flowers.

#30 Star
Someone had once used a pickup line about stars on her; he had admitted to almost using that one, and said that, somehow, he got the impression she would have laughed-- she assured him she would have.

#31 Home
There’s a man and woman who have his eyes, his face, his hair, and there’s a house that just looks like he would have lived there, and she knows that maybe she might have come to call this place home.

#32 Confusion
That gesture, that smile, that shrug, that way of walking, that way of pushing himself up like nothing was wrong, of dashing off to fix any trouble, of diverting them, of distracting them, of telling her which way to run, which way to jump, it was all his, his, his, so why was this new he doing that, where was he from, what was he doing, who was this blonde-haired, blue-eyed stranger and why was he acting so much like him?

#33 Fear
There really wasn't much she was afraid of, and they both knew it; all the same, his arm when around her waist as they made their way home at night, and she was comforted by it.

#34 Lightning/Thunder
A flash and lightning and a peal of thunder herald the loss of power, and in the now dim lighting, the two can only blink, then laugh, and then curl next to each other, watching and listening to the storm rage.

#35 Bonds
Tying the knot, getting married, was not an option for them; one was hunted by ShinRa, and the other worked for them, and neither would endanger the other.

#36 Market
"Give that back!" But, try as she might, Aeris couldn't quite jump high enough to snatch the box of cereal from the fingers of the grinning SOLDIER.

#37 Technology
Midgar is the most advanced city in the world, and even the poor denizens living in the shadow of the floating city can't go two minutes without some creation of ShinRa's staring them in the face; because of this, Zack's favorite spot in the entire city is a quiet little church where flowers grow.

#38 Gift
She had yelped in surprise when he had popped out of nowhere and proudly declared, "Happy Birthday!" But then she had smiled and taken the gift from his hands, and he had promptly encouraged her to open it.

#39 Smile
That grin of his is always in place, but the best times are when it softens into an actual smile.

#40 Innocence
To accept the absence of innocence made their emotional ties all the stronger.

#41 Completion
"It's finished!" "No it's not!" And the two had playfully bickered about the puzzle that was missing three pieces.

#42 Clouds
He always wondered how she got flowers to grow when Midgar was always covered by clouds.

#43 Sky
Lower Midgar did not have a sky, it had a roof-- so it was a good thing that Aeris grew flowers to liven up the drab room.

#44 Heaven
Heaven was being with her.

#45 Hell
Hell was feeling him fade away.

#46 Sun
"Midgar doesn't have a sun," someone had once said, and even though he knew it was cheesy and sappy, he had thought of Aeris and grinned and said, "Sure it does."

#47 Moon
Once, two lovers didn't swear their love on the moon because it waxed and waned; two other lovers think it would be a good thing to swear on, though, because even though the moon wasn't always visible, it was still always, always there.

#48 Waves
The waves are like the Planet's heartbeat, she thinks, and for a minute she can almost pretend that she hears his again.

#49 Hair
His black hair was always wild-- long, but spiky all the same-- and when it was wet she always liked to ruffle it till it stood up at even crazier angles, because it made him look silly and his grin even more endearing.

#50 Supernova
It comes with a suddenness, a forcefulness, a clarity he never thought possible, and the explosion of his senses is enough to take his breath away.
